Synopsis
An overview of the role of equity markets. Topics cover types of equity instruments; the role of broker and market maker; trading conventions and listing requirements of the ASX; the structure and operation of major overseas stock exchanges; an introduction to market micro structure theory; the enterprise market; other markets of the ASX; current issues related to Australia's equity markets.
Outcomes
The learning goals associated with this unit are to:
- explain the importance of the equity market for the economy and for a corporation
- apply different techniques to evaluate trading costs
- appraise equity trading principles and strategies
- undertake a trading simulation exercise and complete a stock report
- apply critical thinking, problem solving and presentation skills to individual and/or group activities dealing with equity markets and demonstrate in an individual summative assessment task the acquisition of a comprehensive understanding of the topics covered by BFF2701.
Assessment
First semester-
Within semester assessment: 30% + Examination: 70%
Second semester-
Within semester assessment: 40% + Examination: 60%
Workload requirements
Minimum total expected workload to achieve the learning outcomes for this unit is 144 hours per semester typically comprising a mixture of scheduled learning activities and independent study. Independent study may include associated readings, assessment and preparation for scheduled activities. The unit requires on average three/four hours of scheduled activities per week. Scheduled activities may include a combination of teacher directed learning, peer directed learning and online engagement.
