The information and society minor explores the social and cultural impact of IT, as well its application in the workplace. These are considered from the historical perspective of technical developments over the past 50 years as well as the contemporary issues around the pervasive use of IT in both personal and professional spheres. This non-technical look at IT in society will provide a valuable breadth component to students from all disciplines who will be graduates in the Information Age.

Units

Minor requirements (24 points)

No more than 12 points at level 1 may be credited to the minor.

Students complete:

  1. The following three units (18 points):
    • FIT1052 Digital futures: IT shaping society
    • FIT2074 Information, technology and organisations
    • FIT3098 Social informatics
  2. One of the following units:
    • ATS1280 Communications and society
    • ATS2436 New media: From the telegraph to twitter
    • FIT1049 IT professional practice
    • FIT3134 IT-based entrepreneurship

Successful completion of the minor can be counted towards meeting the requirements for the following single degree:
