The Faculty of Education develops and provides innovative research and teaching that takes seriously the global-to-local demands of a world-class, Australian public university. Our work focuses on advancing the discipline and practice of education through original research, development and partnership activities. We prepare and develop professionals and practitioners for a range of education settings and specialisations. We also engage policy and public debate on matters of importance to education and educators at all levels.
Our mission is to contribute to the public interest through high-quality and ethical teaching, research, capacity building and community service. To this end, we create and pursue opportunities that strengthen and sustain a vibrant intellectual community, centred on the purposeful, critical and disciplined study of learning and teaching in a range of contexts.
Our vision is of:
The Faculty of Education is based at three of Monash’s Australian campuses: Berwick, Clayton and Peninsula, and offers courses in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong.
The faculty’s undergraduate courses develop effective, innovative and sensitive professionals who support the learning and development of a diverse range of individuals, organisations and communities. Students can choose from a wide range of courses including early childhood, primary, secondary, adult education and sport and outdoor recreation. Diverse professional placement opportunities are offered to enable students to gain first-hand experience while they study.
The faculty offers a range of pre-service teacher qualifications in early childhood, primary, early childhood/primary, primary/secondary (P-10 and special education) and secondary. Undergraduate programs are available that lead to single or double degrees. Double degrees with education are available in arts, commerce, music, science, sport and outdoor recreation, and visual arts.
Early childhood education is a four-year full-time course offered on the Peninsula campus and in the city and Singapore. Students undertake education and curriculum majors together with early childhood educational leadership units. This course prepares students to work in preschools, childcare centres, mobile kindergartens, family day care centres and hospitals as play specialists.
Primary school teacher education is a four-year, full-time course offered on the Peninsula campus. This bachelor degree focuses on teaching and children's learning in the learning areas of arts, English, mathematics, health and physical education, science, humanities and technology. Students can take a double degree (equivalent to 4.25 years of full-time study) combining a Bachelor of Education (Primary) with arts, science, sport and outdoor recreation, or visual arts. Students undertake education and curriculum majors, and in the single degree can opt to specialise through education priorities sequence units and discipline sequences or streams.
The combined early childhood and primary education is a four-year course offered on the Berwick and Peninsula campuses that qualifies students to be early childhood educators in a range of pre-school, kindergarten and primary school settings. Students undertake education and curriculum majors together with early childhood/primary educational leadership units. The course provides a deep understanding of childhood development, educational theories and practice and how to engage children from birth to 12 years in innovative and purposeful learning.
The Bachelor of Education (P-10) is a four-year, full-time course offered at the Berwick campus. This course prepares students for careers as teachers across years Prep to 10. Students undertake education and curriculum majors together with in-depth studies in two discipline areas. Students undertake a range of professional experiences in primary and secondary schools.
The Bachelor of Education (Special Education) is a four-year, full-time course offered at the Berwick campus. This specialised course prepares students for careers in special education (special schools and classes), as well as facilitating inclusion in regular schools. Students undertake education and curriculum majors together with in-depth studies which focus on inclusive and special education. The degree qualifies students to teach across the years Prep to 10 in regular and special education settings.
Secondary teacher education courses are offered at the Clayton campus. Undergraduate students can undertake a four-year double degree (equivalent to 4.25 years of full-time study) combining a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) in which students undertake education and curriculum majors, with another bachelor degree in arts, commerce, music, science, sport and outdoor recreation, or visual arts.
The Bachelor of Adult Learning and Development degree offered at Clayton is designed specifically for people working in the field of adult learning and development who wish to upgrade their formal qualifications, gain recognition for prior work experience, and improve their theoretical knowledge and practical expertise.
The sport and outdoor recreation courses offered at the Peninsula campus prepare students to work in a variety of recreation and outdoor settings. The course is available as a single degree or in a double degree with either a Bachelor of Education (Primary) or Bachelor of Education (Secondary), in which students undertake education and curriculum majors and gain a teaching qualification. Students can also combine the sport and outdoor recreation degree with a Bachelor of Business, which also provides opportunities in traditional business settings.
The Honours degree of Bachelor of Education provides a foundation for students wishing to pursue a higher degree by research. A one-year full-time or two years’ part-time honours degree is available to students who have completed an undergraduate education degree with a distinction average in their final two years of study.
Students in undergraduate teacher education and sport and outdoor recreation courses must successfully complete fieldwork of a specified number of days of professional experience. This may consist of supervised teaching days, community fieldwork and experiential learning program days. The number and type of professional experience days depends on the student’s course and level.
Professional experience connects the theoretical components of students’ academic studies with the practical aspects of teaching, and provides students with real-life experience to put their learning into practice. Students must meet specific security clearances before participating in a professional experience in any educational setting.
Refer to the relevant course for specific fieldwork details.
Primary and secondary education courses are recognised by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT).
