Synopsis
General rules for software development and design. Errors. Data types, variables, expressions, control statements M-files. Numerical techniques: Gauss elimination, solution of non-linear equations, optimisation, curve fitting, numerical calculus, ordinary differential equations.
Objectives
- To develop an understanding of commonly used numerical methods for solving engineering problems; the ability to appropriately apply numerical methods to engineering problems and to know some of the limitations of such methods
- To develop structured problem solving techniques and to develop a knowledge of programming concepts and the ability to write simple programs.
Assessment
Written examination (3 hours): 70%
Continuous assessment: 30%
Contact hours
2 hrs lectures, 2 hrs laboratory, 1 hr practice classes and 7 hrs private study, per week
