Description

This course, offered by the Department of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences, is intended for radiographers or other suitably qualified health professionals seeking to gain an understanding of the principles of ultrasound and study in a particular field of ultrasound.

Assessment

Assessment includes written assignments, theory and image recognition exams and clinical skills examinations.

Objectives

A graduate from the Graduate Certificate in Medical Ultrasound will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • human embryology, anatomy and pathophysiology relevant to sonographic imaging
  • the scientific concepts underpinning ultrasound modes
  • the potential biological consequences of ultrasound, optimisation of sonographic instrumentation and quality assurance.

Graduates will gain further knowledge from completing at least two electives selected from the Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound clinical units that include the following areas:

  • professional ethics, guidelines and standards for the conduct of clinical ultrasound, medico-legal issues, patient care and infection control
  • professional communication.

Graduates will also be able to perform sonographic examinations in areas that may include abdominal, pelvic, obstetric, vascular, musculoskeletal and small parts applications.

Structure

Students complete two compulsory units and two electives.

Requirements

Semester 1

  • SON4000 Physics of medical ultrasound and instrumentation
  • SON4010 Embryology, anatomy and pathophysiology

Semester 2

Select two of:

  • SON4020 Sonographic professional skills and sonography of the breast and thyroid
  • SON4021 Sonographic abdominal imaging
  • SON4022 Sonographic imaging of the reproductive system
  • SON4023 Obstetric sonography
  • SON4024 Musculoskeletal, neonatal and paediatric sonography
  • SON4025 Sonographic vascular and postoperative imaging
