Course description

The Bachelor of Economics degree provides a professional education in the disciplines of economics or econometrics and business statistics, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills. There are also opportunities for undertaking one third of the degree as elective units from outside the faculty, or from those offered by departments of the faculty on other campuses.

Course structure

Areas of study

Students must complete a major specialisation in either economics or econometrics and business statistics. All units taken as part of a major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics. These other studies can, in some cases, form a second major specialisation in a commerce discipline or field of study.

For details of the units required for a major specialisation, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce course entry in the ‘Outline of undergraduate studies – Clayton’ section of this handbook.

Up to eight open electives may also be taken from other campuses or other Monash faculties. These open electives can also, in some cases, form a second major specialisation.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

(a) completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(b) completion of four further compulsory units (24 points):

  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ECC2000 Intermediate microeconomics
  • ECC2010 Intermediate macroeconomics
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year-level units have been completed successfully.

(c) students must complete either:

(i) two additional second-year-level units (12 points) and three third-year-level units (18 points) drawn from the department of Economics to complete a major specialisation in economics, or

(ii) a major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in econometrics or business statistics with at least two second-year-level units (12 points) and three third-year-level units (18 points).

(d) a total of 24 units (144 points) over a maximum of 10 years of study.

(e) a maximum of 10 first-year-level units (60 points).

(f) a minimum of six third-year-level units (36 points), of which at least four (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(g) at least two non-compulsory units (12 points) must be taken from disciplines other than economics or econometrics and business statistics.

(h) an option to include a maximum of eight units (48 points) from disciplines taught by other faculties or from an approved list of faculty units offered on campuses other than Clayton.
