Course description

This double degree course allows students to qualify with both the Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Commerce degrees.

Course objectives

The commerce component of this double degree provides a professional education in a range of commerce and business disciplines with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills. The music component contains both theoretical and practical modules that prepare graduates for a range of roles within the music industry.

Course structure

Areas of study

All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and the Faculty of Arts.

Arts

Students must also complete the prescribed sequence in music from the Faculty of Arts. For information on the requirements of all music studies offered, refer to the ‘Areas of study’ section on the Arts faculty website at www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.

Commerce

Students must complete a major specialisation in one of the following areas taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, Asian development and transition, business law and taxation, competition, regulation and public policy, econometrics and business statistics, economics, finance, human resource management, information, strategy and decision making, international commerce, labour and employment, management or marketing.

All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus. For details of the units required for major specialisations, refer to the Bachelor of Commerce entry.

Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

Music component

(a) students must complete 16 units (96 points) from the School of Music as follows:

(i) a music performance major (54 points):

(ii) three additional core units (18 points):

  • MUS1100 Exploring music I
  • MUS1110 Exploring music II
  • MUS3390 Music aesthetics, criticism, sociology and psychology

(iii) twelve points chosen from:

  • MUS2020 Professional practice 1
  • MUS2030 Professional practice 2
  • MUS2110 Analytical and compositional techniques I
  • MUS2120 Analytical and compositional techniques II
  • MUS2140 From Schubert to Strauss: music of the romantic ideal
  • MUS2660 Music composition and technology workshop I

(iv) twelve points chosen from:

  • MUS3310 Contemporary compositional techniques
  • MUS3330 Music of north and south India
  • MUS3490 Indonesian gamelan: special studies
  • MUS3660 Music composition and technology workshop II
  • MUS3880 Music of China, Japan and Korea
  • MUS3910 Music of Sub-Saharan Africa
Commerce component

(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 points) from the following list:

  • AFC1030 Introduction to financial accounting
  • AFC1100/AFC2100 Introduction to finance, or
  • ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
  • ETC1010 Data modelling and computing
  • MGC1020 Organisations: contexts and strategies

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level.

(iv) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(v) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

The degree requires the equivalent of four-and-a-quarter years of full-time study, but can be completed in four years by accelerating with an overload of 12 points. The degree must be completed in a maximum of 10 years of study.
