Master of Emergency Health (Paramedic)

Course description

The course, offered by the Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice, aims to support students in improving their clinical practice and knowledge related to the delivery of emergency health services and prepares them for leadership positions. Within this course, students explore their own role and the role of their employer from the context of an integrated emergency medical system and draw on their workplace experience to promote self-directed learning opportunities aimed at improving their clinical practice. Students also select two minor elective streams of study relevant to the emergency health services context to meet both their learning needs and interests. In the final year, students study clinical research in emergency health services and select the option of undertaking a clinical project or studying clinical improvement, education or leadership at an advanced level.

Course objectives

On completion of the course, graduates will have the knowledge, skills and attributes to: 1. demonstrate the characteristics of a critical and reflective practitioner engaging in life-long learning with a dynamic community based emergency health environment; 2. apply an analytical approach to the exercise of clinical judgement and decision-making in the context of the delivery of community based emergency health within an integrated emergency medical system; 3. evaluate the impact of community based emergency health within an integrated emergency medical system; 4. demonstrate the attributes required of an interactional professional in community based emergency health; 5. enhance their ability to perform in their role as a senior emergency health services clinical practitioner, through the detailed exploration of clinical improvement methods, clinical education practice and/or clinical leadership; 6. add to the body of knowledge related to emergency health services clinical practice by the preparation of scholarly work suitable for publication in the area of clinical improvement methods, clinical education practice and/or clinical leadership; and 7. explore an area of interest that is either related to the field of community based emergency health or enhances the ability of the graduate to undertake an advanced clinical practitioner role, through the completion of elective units of study.

Course structure

Students are required to complete three core units (18 points), six electives from category A (36 points) and a further 18 points of electives from category B (either three 6-point electives or the clinical project unit and one other elective).

Category A – elective units

Students to select six units from the following list:

  • PAR4101 Teaching and learning for paramedical clinical teachers
  • PAR4201 Introduction to aeromedical retrieval
  • PAR4202 Aeromedical retrieval – clinical
  • PAR4203 Aeromedical retrieval – practicum
  • PAR4204 Aeromedical retrieval rescue
  • PAR4205 Aeromedical retrieval project
  • PAR4206 International aeromedical retrieval
  • or other electives from within the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences postgraduate areas, subject to approval from course coordinator

Category B – elective units

  • MEH5020 Clinical improvement in emergency health services
  • MEH5030 Clinical education in emergency health services
  • MEH5040 Clinical leadership in emergency health services
  • MEH5050 Emergency health services clinical project*

    * Students interested in undertaking the clinical project elective will be required to discuss their proposed topic with the course coordinator to identify their choice of electives.

Assessment

Assessment consists of written assignments, literature review and presentations.
