Course description

The course, offered by the Department of Community Emergency Health and Paramedic Practice, is designed to prepare MICA paramedics for clinical leadership positions in the emergency health services field, for example as a clinical support officer in an ambulance service or an academic in an educational facility.

Course objectives

On completion of this course, the graduates will be able to: 1. apply the principles of good clinical research practice within the context of emergency health; 2. enhance their ability to perform in their role as a senior emergency health services clinical practitioner, through the detailed exploration of clinical improvement methods, clinical education practice and/or clinical leadership; 3. provide leadership in the implementation and management of clinical practice change; and 4. contribute to the body of knowledge related to emergency health services clinical practice by the preparation of scholarly work suitable for publication in the area of clinical improvement methods, clinical education practice and/or clinical leadership.

Course structure

The course comprises 72 points, made up of 48 points for completion of the Graduate Diploma in Emergency Health (MICA Paramedic) (or an approved equivalent) and an additional 24 points consisting of one core unit and three coursework electives, or one core unit and one elective plus a clinical project*.

  • MEH5040 Clinical leadership in emergency health services
  • MEH5050 Emergency health services clinical project

    * Prior to enrolment in the clinical project unit (MEH5050), students will be required to discuss their topic with the course coordinator to identify their choice of electives. Generally, students undertaking a project related to clinical improvement will be required to enrol in MEH5020; students undertaking a project related to paramedic education will be required to enrol in MEH5030; and students undertaking a project with a clinical leadership focus will be required to enrol in MEH5040.

Assessment

Assessment for this course will be a mixture of written assignments, literature review, online discussion participation and a presentation/clinical project.
