Master of Information Management and Systems Professional

Course code: 3324 + Course abbreviation: MIMSPro + Total credit points required: 96 + 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time

Study mode and course location

On-campus (Caulfield)

Course description

MIMS Professional, offered by the Caulfield School of Information Technology, aims to prepare students for careers in information systems and information management. Graduates of the program are expected to play leading professional roles in Australia and other countries. The course attracts students from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. Students are required to specialise in at least two areas of information systems or information management. The course can be studied in full-time and part-time modes, and a number of units are available by off-campus learning.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications can enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or the Executive Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school.

Credit for prior studies

Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised professional track in information systems or information management may be granted credit. The granting of more than 24 points of credit is rare. Students who have been granted credit must still meet the professional track and foundation unit requirements in order to complete this course.

Course structure

To qualify with the MIMS Professional, students must complete 96 points of graduate units – a minimum of 72 points from MIMS units, and a maximum of 24 points of free choice electives which can be taken from any graduate program in the Faculty of Information Technology, or with the approval of the course leader, a maximum of 12 points of these free choice electives may be taken from other faculties of the university. The IMS units in the MIMS Professional are shown in the list below. Each student's course of study must include four foundation units and at least two professional tracks from information technology management, information systems development, business intelligence, knowledge management, e-business, library and information services, or electronic recordkeeping and archiving.

Students should take careful note of prerequisites for the units in the professional tracks they have chosen and complete these units early in their course. Some units have foundation units as prerequisites. The foundation units have been designed for students with little prior study in information technology. It is highly recommended that students undertake postgraduate orientation activities and workshops coordinated by the Faculty of IT.

Once students have designed their basic course of study, namely the foundation units and the requirements of two professional tracks, they must then select other graduate units to make up the remainder of the 96 points. This elective study can involve a third professional track, a selection of units from other professional tracks or IMS additional ‘research and professional development’ units, or other approved graduate units from outside the school. Some IMS units are classed as ‘special entry’, and admission requires the formal approval of the head of school. Completing a third professional track is dependent on timetabling and may take longer than four semesters to complete. The professional tracks completed will be acknowledged on a student's official academic transcript.

Minor thesis option

Students who wish to pursue a research pathway may take a 24-point minor thesis (FIT5014) in the final stage of their MIMS Professional degree. However, this option is only open to students with at least a distinction average for their coursework, and who have their course coordinator’s approval. Students undertaking a minor thesis will need to have first completed a research methods unit such as FIT4005 (IT research methods) prior to undertaking the thesis.

To graduate from the MIMS Professional, students must complete the requirements for Part A, Part B and Part C, below:

Part A: Four foundation units (24 points)

  • FIT9003 Database systems analysis and implementation *

(c) the unit leaders of IMS5021 or IMS5037 approve the content of each substituted unit as being appropriate to the professional track, and

(d) the Postgraduate Coursework Faculty Education Subcommittee approves the unit substitution.
