Entry requirementsThe normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications can enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or the Executive Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school. Credit for prior studiesStudents who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised professional track in information systems or information management may be granted credit. The granting of more than 24 points of credit is rare. Students who have been granted credit must still meet the professional track and foundation unit requirements in order to complete this course. Course structureTo qualify with the MIMS, students must complete 72 points of graduate units – a minimum of 60 points from MIMS units and a maximum of 12 points of free choice electives which can be taken from any graduate program in the Faculty of Information Technology or, with the approval of the course leader, from other faculties of the university. The MIMS units are shown in the list below. Each student's course of study must include four foundation units and at least one professional track from information systems development, information technology management, knowledge management, business intelligence, library and information services, electronic recordkeeping and archiving or e-business. Students should take careful note of prerequisites for the units in the professional tracks that they have chosen and complete these units early in their course. Some units have foundation units as prerequisites. The foundation units have been designed for students with little prior study in information technology. It is highly recommended that students undertake postgraduate orientation activities and workshops coordinated by the Faculty of IT. Once students have designed their basic course of study, namely the foundation units and the requirements of one professional track, they must then select other graduate units to make up the remainder of the 72 points. This elective study can involve a second professional track, a selection of units from other professional tracks or IMS additional ‘research and professional development’ units, a minor thesis, or other approved graduate units. Some IMS electives are classed as ‘special entry’, and admission requires the formal approval of the head of school. The professional tracks completed will be acknowledged on a student’s official academic transcript. Students who wish to pursue a research pathway may take a 24-point minor thesis (FIT5014) in the final stage of their MIMS degree. However, this option is only open to students with at least a distinction average for their coursework, and who have their course coordinator’s approval. Students undertaking a minor thesis will need to have first completed a research methods unit such as FIT4005 (IT research methods) prior to undertaking the thesis. Foundation units (24 points)Students undertake the following foundation units:
