Graduates are expected to play leading professional roles in Australia and other countries. The course attracts students from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. It can be studied in full-time and part-time modes, and a number of units are available by off-campus learning. Students may also take out this award by exiting the Master of Information Management and Systems or the Master of Information Management and Systems Professional, after completing 48 points of study. Students who successfully complete 24 points of study from information management and systems graduate units may choose to exit this course with a Graduate Certificate in Information Management and Systems. Entry requirementsThe normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications should normally enter after successful completion of the Professional Certificate in Information Technology or the Executive Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school. Credit for prior studiesStudents who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit. A maximum of 24 points of credit is available. Students who have been granted credit must still meet the specialisation and foundation unit requirements in order to complete the course. Course structureStudents complete eight 6-point graduate-level units from the list below (48 points), of which six (36 points) must be information management and systems units. Up to two units (12 points) may be units offered by any school within the university (including the Faculty of Information Technology), subject to approval by the course coordinator. Students without appropriate background knowledge will be required to satisfactorily complete a selection of the foundation units (9000 level) before proceeding to other graduate units (5000 level). The foundation units have been designed for students with little prior study in information technology. It is highly recommended that students undertake postgraduate orientation activities and workshops coordinated by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Professional recognitionThe Faculty of Information Technology has applied for accreditation in 2007 for the Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems from the Australian Computer Society (ACS) which may enable graduates of the course to be eligible for professional-level membership of the ACS.
