Course description

This course, offered by the Caulfield School of Information Technology, aims to prepare students for careers in information management. Graduates of the program are expected to play leading professional roles in Australia and overseas. The course attracts students from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. It can be studied in full-time and part-time modes, and most of the units are available by off-campus learning.

Students may also take out this award by exiting the Master of Information Management and Systems or the Master of Information Management and Systems Professional, after completing 48 points of study.

Students who successfully complete 24 points of study from the information management and systems graduate stream may choose to exit this course with a Graduate Certificate in Information Management and Systems.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications should normally enter via the Professional Certificate in Information Technology, except in exceptional circumstances as approved by the head of school.

Credit for prior studies

Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information management may be granted credit. A maximum of 24 points of credit is available. Students who have been granted credit must still meet the specialisation unit requirements in order to complete the course.

Course structure

Students must complete eight graduate-level units (48 points), including a minimum of 40 points from information management and systems units and a maximum of one unit (6 points) of free choice elective which may be taken from any graduate program in the Faculty of Information Technology, or, subject to approval by the course coordinator, from other faculties of the university. It is highly recommended that students undertake postgraduate orientation activities and workshops coordinated by the Faculty of Information Technology.

The course structures below are for (a) librarians and related information professionals, and for (b) records managers and archivists. All units are 6 points, unless otherwise specified.

(a) Course structure for professional recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA)

Students who wish to select an IKM-related elective may consider taking one of the following units:

  • IMS5047 Managing business records *

(b) Course structure for professional recognition by the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) and the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).

Professional recognition

The faculty anticipates that s tudents who successfully complete the GradDipIKM in accordance with the structure outlined above should be eligible for professional membership of the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), or the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA) and the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).
