Course description

This 16 unit (96 points) course comprises compulsory and elective units. The two compulsory units enable students to gain knowledge and skills which are essential attributes for accounting graduates. Ten elective units offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance and four elective units offered by any of the six departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics provide flexibility. This flexible structure enables students to construct a program that best suits their future career. Students who are associate members of CPA Australia are permitted to enrol in units that are offered in conjunction with CPA Australia provided they also enrol in the equivalent CPA segment with CPA Australia.

Credit for prior studies

Candidates who have completed graduate level studies considered to be equivalent to one or more units may be eligible for credit for a maximum of eight credits (48 points).

Course structure

(a) Students must complete two compulsory units (12 points):

  • AFF5200 Issues in competitive advantage I
  • AFF5401 Issues in competitive advantage II

(b) Students must complete ten 5000-level units (60 points) offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance including at least two of the following:

  • AFF5030 Advanced finance
  • AFF5040 Advanced investments
  • AFF5070 Strategic policy and entrepreneurship
  • AFF5080 Business accounting II: strategic issues
  • AFF5090 Financial reporting and statement analysis
  • AFF5280 Institutional asset and liability management

(c) Completion of four graduate units (24 points) offered by any department in the Faculty of Business and Economics.

It is recommended that students consult with the course director to ensure their elective units form a coherent study program.
