Likewise, a new paradigm of conducting business has developed, which also exploits the internet’s capabilities. And with the growing sophistication of the capabilities of internet-based technologies, so too has there been a growing sophistication in the modes of internet-based commerce. For those who wish to pursue a career in an internet-related field, an understanding of both these aspects is essential, including a knowledge of the technologies on which the internet is founded and an understanding of the clever use of these technologies to conduct internet based commerce. Internet commerce needs to be viewed in its widest sense and includes all manner of online services in areas of government, health and education, as well as in commercial enterprises such as banking, information services and online retailing. This course addresses these major aspects of internet-based commerce: the technologies of building commercial web systems and the undertaking of commerce via the internet. On the computing side, the degree covers fundamentals in programming, computer organisation, information systems, database, project management, security, and then an in-depth study of developing commercial strength web-based systems. On the commerce side, the degree covers the fundamentals of accounting, management, marketing and business law, before moving to a more advanced treatment of e-business and information technology law. Course structureThe degree is made up of core units and three commerce elective units. The core comprises 54 points of first-year units, 30 points of second-year units and 42 points of third-year units. Note that some units may require study at Berwick campus.
