Synopsis: Students work in a small project team, under the direction of a supervisor, to develop a distributed information system or network solution in response to a client's requirements. During the project lifecycle students will plan, monitor and control the course of the project throughout all the phases, including implementation. This will require students to use the skills gained during their course, such as, written and oral communication, research, critical thought and analysis, problem solving and teamwork. Each team is expected to follow well-defined guidelines in regard to ethical work practices, project management and quality assurance techniques with defined roles for each team member.

Objectives: On the successful completion of this unit students should gain some practical experience on an IT project for an industrial client and should be able to: 1. Control system development through suitable project management tools. This will involve the identification of necessary tasks in the development, and the estimation of task duration and scheduling of these tasks. 2. Show managerial judgement over the development process. 3. Perform all technical tasks in a professional and competent manner. 4. Work effectively, ethically and co-operatively within a team environment.

Assessment: Project Management: 20%; Presentation: 10%; Project Plan Document: 10%; Analysis Document: 30%; Design Prototype: 30%

Contact Hours: It is expected that the students spend 12 hours per week on their project. Each week the team will attend either: 1.0hr meeting with the team Supervisor; or 0.5hr formal review at major milestones; or 0.5hr presentation. The remainder of the assigned time will be spent on assigned project tasks.

Prerequisites: Students commencing this unit will be required to have completed 36 points of 1st year computing units, 12 points of 2nd year computing units, including FIT2002 IT Project Management.
