Course description

In this double-degree program, the aerospace engineering component will develop strength in the core discipline areas of aerodynamics, aerospace materials, aerospace structures, propulsion and aerospace instrumentation and control, complemented by a major emphasis on design, which will be taught with a project-based focus. In addition, the program provides a professional education in a range of commerce disciplines, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills and professional competence for careers in the business or public sector.

Areas of study

Students must complete a major specialisation in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, Asian development and transition business law and taxation, competition regulation and public policy, econometrics and business statistics, economics, finance, human resource management, information strategy and decision making, international commerce, labour and employment, management or marketing. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus. Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.

Students must also complete the prescribed sequence in aerospace engineering listed below.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:

(a) Students must complete 17 units (102 points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:

(i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 points):

• AFC1021/AFC1022 Accounting principles
• BTC1110 Business law
• ECC1000 Principles of microeconomics
• ETC1000 Business and economic statistics
• MGC1010 Managing people and organisations
• MKC1200 Principles of marketing

(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 points) from the following:

• AFC1100/AFC2100 Introduction to finance, or
  AFC1030 Introduction to financial accounting
• ECC1100 Principles of macroeconomics
• ETC1010 Data modelling and computing
• MGC1020 Organisations: contexts and strategies

First-year students normally may not take a second-year-level unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.

(iii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 points at each of second and third-year level.

(iv) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 points).

(v) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.

(b) Students must complete 138 points from the Faculty of Engineering as follows:

First year

Students must complete four (24 points) compulsory core engineering units as follows:

• ENG1040 Engineering dynamics
• ENG1060 Computing for engineers
• ENG1091 Mathematics for engineers
• MAE1041 Aerospace engineering

plus those who have not completed VCE units 3 and 4 of Chemistry or Physics and/or Specialist Mathematics must select none, one or two appropriate foundation units from:

• ENG1070 Foundation chemistry
• ENG1080 Foundation physics
• ENG1090 Foundation mathematics

plus none, one or two engineering electives (depending on prerequisites) from the following list:

• ENG1020 Engineering structures
• ENG1030 Electrical systems

Second year

Students must complete two engineering units (12 points) as follows:

• MEC2401 Dynamics I
• ENG2091 Advanced engineering mathematics A

Third year

Students must complete three engineering units (18 points) as follows:

• MAE2400 Engineering materials
• MAE2402 Thermodynamics and heat transfer
• ENG2092 Advanced engineering mathematics B

Fourth year

Students must complete six engineering units (36 points) as follows:

• MAE2401 Aircraft structures
• MAE3xxx Aerospace materials
• MAE3xxx Aircraft and rocket propulsion
• MAE3xxx Aircraft dynamics
• MEC2402 Engineering design I
• MEC2404 Fluid mechanics I

Fifth year

Students must complete six engineering units (36 points) as follows:

• MAE3xxx Aerodynamics
• MAE3xxx Aircraft structures
• MAE3xxx Control
• MAE4xxx Aerospace practices
• MAE4xxx Aerospace project 1
• MAE4xxx Aerospace project 2

The course may be completed in five years of full-time study at a normal course load. The maximum time for completion is 10 years.
