Course description

This course provides specialist skills in key areas related to financial institutions management and the core business foundation units combined with the broad teaching and learning objectives of the Bachelor of Arts degree. The Bachelor of Arts is a general, flexible degree which allows students to match academic interests with career aspirations to create a personalised course progression. Studying humanities will develop general knowledge and specific intellectual skills relating to human thought and relations, such as the way we communicate or how the past has affected the present. Social science analyses and explains societies and the relationships of individuals within those societies.

Course structure

Students must complete 96 points in the Bachelor of Arts component and 108 points in the Bachelor of Business (Banking and Finance) component.

Arts component

(a) An arts discipline major (48 points).

(b) An arts discipline minor (24 points).

(d) A further 12 points in arts units.

Business component

(a) Inner core - completion of six compulsory units (36 points):

(b) Outer core - completion of six outer core units (36 points), including the two compulsory units (12 points) listed below and a further four units (24 points) from the remaining units listed:

BTF2601 Banking law
BTF3931 Taxation law
ECF1200 Macroeconomics
ETX2121 Data analysis in business

(c) Strand - the following six units (36 points) are compulsory and complete a major specialisation in banking and finance:

AFF1300 Money and capital markets
AFF2401 Commercial banking and finance
AFF3121 Investment and portfolio management
AFF3651 Treasury management
AFF3331 International banking and finance
AFF3841 Lending decisions

(d) A maximum of 10 first-year-level units.

(e) A minimum of four third-year-level units.

The degree requires the equivalent of four-and-a-quarter years of full-time study, but can be completed in four years by accelerating with an overload of 12 points.

Note that students have a maximum of 10 years to complete this course.

Professional recognition

The degree satisfies the education requirements for senior associate membership of the Australasian Institute of Banking and Finance. Holders of the degree who have not completed the two years of employment in the banking and finance industry required for senior associate membership are eligible for associate membership in the interim.
