Course description

This course, offered by the Caulfield School of Information Technology, aims to prepare students for careers in information systems and information management. Graduates are expected to play leading professional roles in Australia and other countries. The course attracts students from a wide variety of educational and professional backgrounds. It can be studied in full-time and part-time modes, and a number of units are available by off-campus learning.

The GDIMS is both an entry and exit award. To qualify for the award, students must complete 48 points of graduate units, of which 36 points must be graduate information management and systems (IMSxxxx) units as listed below. Students may also take out this award by exiting the Master of Information Management and Systems after completing 48 points of study.

Entry requirements

The normal entry requirement is a degree that is equivalent to an Australian bachelors degree. Candidates without formal tertiary qualifications should normally enter via the faculty’s Professional Certificate in Information Technology.

Advanced standing

Students who have completed a graduate qualification with a recognised specialisation in information systems or information management may be granted credit or advanced standing. A maximum of 24 points of credit or advanced standing is available.

Course structure

Students must complete eight graduate-level units, of which six must be information management and systems (IMSxxxx) units. Up to two units (12 points) may be units offered by any school within the university (including the Faculty of Information Technology), subject to approval by the course coordinator. Students without appropriate background knowledge will be required to satisfactorily complete a selection of the foundation units (9000 level) before proceeding to other graduate units (5000 level).

Professional recognition

Students who successfully complete the GDIMS may, depending on their unit choice, be eligible for professional accreditation/recognition by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the Records Management Association of Australia (RMAA), and the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).
