Course description

The Master of Business (Banking and Finance) by coursework and minor thesis offers specialised studies in the banking and finance industry. The program aims to provide students with the conceptual and managerial decision-making skills necessary for effective management in the continuously changing domestic and international financial market environment.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

  • a degree from a recognised tertiary institution with an average grade of credit, or
  • an honours degree in a relevant discipline, or the Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution with an average grade of credit for entry to the second year of the program.

Course structure

  1. Students must complete four core units (24 points):

    • AFF9260 Australian capital markets
    • AFF9270 Treasury management for financial institutions
    • AFF9350 Portfolio management and theory
    • AFX9641 Business finance*, or
      AFF9250 Financial management theory

    * Students who study AFX9641 must have an accounting background.

  2. Students must complete four units (24 points) from the following list:

    • AFF9020 Introduction to risk principles
    • AFF9040 Asian banking and finance
    • AFF9130 Financial planning environment
    • AFF9140 Bank lending
    • AFF9150 Options, futures and risk management
    • AFF9160 International banking and finance, or
      AFX9870 International study program in banking and finance
    • AFF9180 Financial institutions planning and strategy
    • AFF9770 Risk financing and treasury management
    • BTX9380 Banking law and practice
    • ETX9520 Quantitative methods for risk analysis
    • MKF9790 Banking and financial services marketing
    • Or any other 9000-level units from the Department of Accounting and Finance, in a finance discipline, subject to approval by the course director
  3. Students must complete eight units (48 points) at 4000 and 5000 level from the Department of Accounting and Finance, in a finance discipline, subject to approval from the course director.
