Course description

This course is designed to enhance and develop the knowledge and skills of accounting graduates in public practice, industry and academia. The degree encompasses studies at an advanced level in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, corporate and international finance and investments, and electives chosen from masters-level units offered in banking, marketing and management. Students attain an advanced conceptual understanding of the fields of accounting and finance, complemented by a wide range of practical applications and case studies. Students also gain insight into research methodologies and techniques which extend and support their learning and expose them to the contemporary issues and problems confronting modern accountants and finance specialists.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed, with an average grade of credit or above, a pass degree with a major in the discipline of accounting, banking, or finance, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution. Students who have completed the Master of Practising Accounting, or an honours degree in accounting, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting, or Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management with an average grade of credit from this university may also apply for admission to this masters degree. For the advanced accounting stream, applicants must be an associate member of CPA Australia.

Advanced standing

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of eight credit exemptions for units considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete eight units (48 points) from one of the following streams:

Advanced accounting stream

(i) Five units (30 points) from the following list:

  • AFF5001 CPA Reporting and professional practice
  • AFF5005 CPA Strategic management accounting
  • AFX5002 CPA Financial accounting
  • AFX5004 CPA Financial risk management
  • AFX5006 CPA Assurance services and auditing
  • AFX5012 CPA Corporate governance and accountability
  • BTX5003 CPA Taxation

(ii) At least one unit (6 points) from the following list:

  • AFX4011 Business accounting: concepts and techniques 1
  • AFF4012 Strategic policy and entrepreneurship
  • AFF4013 Financial reporting and statement analysis
  • AFF4014 Business accounting: strategic issues 2

(iii) A maximum of two units (12 points) from graduate offerings of the faculty, but no more than one taken from an external institution.

Financial management stream

(i) At least two units (12 points) from the following list:

  • AFF4013 Financial reporting and statement analysis
  • AFF4030 Advanced finance
  • AFF4040 Advanced investments
  • AFF4281 Institutional asset and liability management

(ii) Four units (24 points) from those listed in (i) above (and not previously selected) or from 4000-level units offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance. If AFF4050 (Independent research project) (12 points) is chosen, then corequisite units AFF4060 (Research methods 1) and AFF4061 (Research methods 2) must be taken as well.

(iii) Remaining units chosen from the graduate program of the Department of Accounting and Finance. Unit selection will be undertaken by students in consultation with the course director.

(b) Students must complete two core units (12 points):

  • AFF5200 Issues in competitive advantage I
  • AFF5401 Issues in competitive advantage II

(c) Students must complete six units (36 points) from the following list:

  • AFF5100 Advanced strategic management accounting
  • AFF5110 Advanced information systems
  • AFF5120 Advanced auditing and professional practice
  • AFF5130 Financial statement analysis
  • AFF5140 International finance
  • AFF5150 Financial reporting issues
  • AFF5190 Research dissertation (two-unit equivalent research report)
  • or any 5000-level unit in the Department of Accounting and Finance
  • or any 5000-level unit in the Faculty of Business and Economics (two units maximum)
