Course description

This course is designed for people who are working or intend to work in any area of management, with a particular interest in human resources. It provides managers who already hold an undergraduate degree with the opportunity to undertake formal study and gain a qualification in the field of human resource management. It also enables managers to make the transition to a new role in human resource management.

The course provides study for graduates who are actively involved and interested in managerial and strategic issues related to managing people. Students have the opportunity to develop their knowledge base in human resource management by examining the theoretical bases and research in this field. Further, units in this course cover a wide range of contemporary practical issues related to managing human resources.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

  • a bachelors degree from a recognised tertiary institution or equivalent qualification as determined by faculty board, and
  • a minimum of two years of relevant employment experience.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete three core units (18 points):

  • MGX9600 Managing people and organisations
  • MGX9850 Human resource management
  • MGX9180 Employee relations*,
    or MGX9220 Industrial and workplace relations

(b) Students must complete one elective unit (6 points) from 9000-level units taught by the Department of Management, other departments in the Faculty of Business and Economics, or other faculties of Monash University.

Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate in Human Resources may apply for admission to either the Graduate Diploma in Human Resources or the Master of Human Resource Management and would be eligible for advanced standing for four units.
