Course description

This course deals with the basics of linguistics, and may be taken for its own sake or by way of preparation for the study of the applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts covered in the Master of Applied Linguistics program.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year; or a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area (these applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees); or completion of the Monash Faculty/Graduate Certificate in Applied Linguistics provided a credit average was achieved. Note that prior study of linguistics is not required as a prerequisite.

Advanced standing

In accordance with the policy to award credit for prior learning, advanced standing to a maximum of 24 points may be counted towards the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics.

Course structure

The course normally consists of three (but a minimum of two) core units and one (or a maximum of two) elective unit (12 points per unit; 48 points in total).

  • ALM4110 General linguistics (compulsory unless exempted)
  • ALM4130 Language in society (compulsory unless exempted)
  • ALM4150 Research design in applied linguistics (compulsory unless exempted)

Students require a credit average in the postgraduate diploma program to transfer to the Master of Applied Linguistics by coursework.
