Masters Qualifying in Applied Linguistics with a research component

Course description

This program is intended for students who are able to undertake a research project as part of their level-four studies. This option can act as a preparation for entry to a research degree such as the MA in Linguistics by coursework and research or the MA by 100% research.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold at least a pass bachelors degree with a major sequence in linguistics or a major sequence in English or another language, with results at least at credit standard in the third part of the major sequence.

Course structure

Students complete four 12-point units (48 points in total) from the units listed below, including ALM4190/ALM5410 (Research project). The research project must normally be completed on campus.

  • ALM4110 General linguistics (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)
  • ALM4130 Language in society (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)
  • ALM4150 Research design in applied linguistics (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)
  • ALM4190/ALM5410 Research project (normally available on-campus)

  • ALM5230 Bilingualism
  • ALM5250 Second language acquisition
  • ALM5270 Literacy
  • ALM5290 Child language acquisition

Alternative electives may be approved on an individual basis.

Exit point

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Faculty/Graduate Certificate in Linguistics.

Articulation

Students require a qualifying grade of H2A and a grade of distinction or above for the research component to progress to the MA in Linguistics by research (100% research or 66% research) or directly to the PhD.

Students require a credit average in the Masters Qualifying to transfer to the Master of Applied Linguistics by coursework.
