Clayton Second semester 2006 (OCL)
Synopsis: Issues of mother-tongue and second language literacy. The socio-cultural context of literacy, especially cross-cultural and gender issues. The development of literacy in the pre-school years and in the classroom context. Approaches to the teaching of reading and writing. Genre theory and the contribution of a systemic-function approach to the development of writing.
Assessment: On-campus students: Research project (5000 words): 50% + Class work (oral and written, 2000 words): 50%; Off-campus students: Research project (4000 words): 40% + Two assignments (1500 words each): 30% + Open-book test (3000 words equivalent): 30%
