Master of Applied Linguistics (1.5-year program)

Course description

Students will gain a critical understanding of theoretical and practical issues relating to applied linguistics, including second/foreign language acquisition, language teaching, language contact and intercultural communication.

The course is normally undertaken in one-and-a-half years of full-time study or three years of part-time study.

Entry requirements

Applicants should hold a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year; or a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area (these applicants will need to supply a CV, a-1000 word statement and names of two professional referees); or completion of the Monash Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics provided a credit average in the Postgraduate Diploma was achieved. Note that prior study of Linguistics is not required as a prerequisite.

Advanced standing

In accordance with the policy to award credit for prior learning, advanced standing to a maximum of 48 points may be counted towards the Masters in Applied Linguistics.

Course structure

The course consists of six 12-point units, with three core units and three electives. Students undertake units to the value of 24 points at fourth-year level in their first semester of enrolment, followed by another 24 points at either fourth or fifth-year level in the second semester. In the final semester, students take 24 points at fifth-year level. There are three compulsory core units. Remaining units are selected from the set of electives. Students can enter the program in the first or second semester. The course may also be taken part-time.

  • ALM4110 General linguistics (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)
  • ALM4130 Language in society (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)
  • ALM4150 Research design in applied linguistics (compulsory unless exempted by course coordinator)

Electives

Alternative electives may be approved on an individual basis.

Minimum pass grade

To graduate with the Master of Applied Linguistics, students must gain a credit (60 C) or above in core units and a minimum credit average overall.

Exit points

After successful completion of 24 points, students may apply to exit the program with a Graduate Certificate in Linguistics, or after successful completion of 48 points with a Postgraduate Diploma in Linguistics.
