Synopsis: The unit examines the range of threats to computer systems, and the mechanisms for prevention and recovery, as well as issues of organisational responsibility. Topics will include: the nature and range of systems security threats, cryptographical algorithms, security policies, counter-measures; confidentiality, authenticity, non-repudiation; infrastructure for digital certifications and signatures; operating systems' security; email security, IPSec, hardware and software firewalls, smart cards, SET and mobile codes. The unit combines theoretical with practical topics.

Assessment: Three assignments (45%) Attendance (5%) Examination (50%)

Contact Hours: The student workload requirement is 12 hours per week for 13 weeks. Students will attend 2 hours of lectures and one 2 hour tutorial/laboratory session per week. Students are expected to spend 8 hours per week on individual study and assignment work, including library and computing laboratory work beyond these normal class hours.
