Synopsis: The subject aims to provide students with an understanding of how data is communicated between network applications and the issues involved in running these applications. Topics to be covered include OSI reference model layers, protocols and services; data transmission basics; interface standards; topologies; data link protocols; routing; broadband; LAN; WAN; Wireless protocols (basic); TCP/IP suite; ATM; network management.
Assessment: Practical Work: 40%; Examination (3 hours):60% (exam 2 hours, unit test 1 hour)
Contact Hours: 4 hours per week
Prerequisites: CPE1002, CPE1005
