Synopsis: Topics include basic concepts and principles of data transmission, major components of data communication systems, communication software, data link controls, introduction to network architecture, the open system interconnection model (OSI) and local area networks.

Assessment: Examination (3 hours): 60% + Assignments/tutorial work/practical work: 40%

Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures per week and one 3-hour laboratory per fortnight

Prerequisites: CSE1303 or CSE1201 or equivalent
