Synopsis: Data communications and networks in the context of developments in telecommunication networks. Topics include basic concepts and principles of telecommunications systems, data transmission, major components of data communications systems, communication software, data link control, introduction to network architecture, open system interconnection models (OSI) and local area networks.
Assessment: Assignment: 30% + Examination (2 hours): 70% + Students must pass the examination in order to pass the unit.
Contact Hours: Two 1-hour lectures and one 1-hour tutorial per week
