Foundations of knowledge, science and evidence based CBEH ( 3 points, SCA Band 2, 0.063 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit explores the basis of science, knowledge and evidence. Models of scientific knowledge, will be discussed together with approaches to determining new knowledge, inquiry, truth and change. The principles of a scholarly approach to investigation and developing the knowledge base for this discipline will be explored. Students will be encouraged to develop their capacity for enquiry, research, critical thought, analysis, the use of information technology, by presenting their thoughts and analyses to their peer group. The principles of evidence-based practice and transmitting theory to practice will be examined and applied to the setting of community-based emergency health.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, the student will be able to: 1. explain the concepts of science, knowledge and truth, scientific method, research, and evaluation; 2. demonstrate a knowledge of the core elements of a scholarly approach to investigations; 3. demonstrate the use of information technology to access research resources relating to emergency care and prepare a literature review on a topic of interest relating to CBEH; 4. demonstrate critical appraisal of the literature related to an aspect of emergency care practice; 5. demonstrate the ability to clearly present their thoughts and analysis to their peer group by way of a formal presentation, and in writing by way of the Unit assignment; and 6. outline the principles of evidence-based practice, determining evidence and transmitting theory to practice in the setting of CBEH.

Assessment: Literature search and 500 word summary: 20% + Worksheets (x3): 30% + Assignment (1500 words): 40% + Verbal presentation on assignment topic: 10%
