Foundations of professionalism in paramedic practice ( 3 points, SCA Band 2, 0.063 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit explores the "professional self" and introduces the concept of professionalism through an examination of contemporary models of professionalism. This unit will identify the attributes expected of graduate paramedics by the university, the industry, the profession, and the community. The principles of ethical practice standards and legal issues will be examined. The unit will explore cultural diversity and introduce a framework for developing cultural competence in professional practice.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, the student will be able to: 1. accurately describe contemporary models of professionalism and their application to the role of the paramedic; 2. explain the essentials of ethical standards in clinical practice, and, relate these standards to the role of the paramedic; 3. recognise and explain the legal implications and responsibilities of the paramedic; and 4. define culture and cultural diversity, and, using a model of cultural competence, explain cultural implications within paramedic practice.

Assessment: 4 x worksheets: 60% + Written assignment (1500 words): 40%
