Foundations of community based emergency health care systems ( 3 points, SCA Band 2, 0.063 EFTSL)

Synopsis: This unit explores the paramedic operational setting from both national and international sources. The unit will outline the history, milestones, and influences on community-based emergency health (CBEH) systems in Australia. It will also identify the attributes of an effective system and explore influences, drivers for change, impact, and future directions. Of specific interest will be issues relating to integration, co-ordination, teamwork, continuity of care, and the role of consumers. This unit includes student visits to selected components of the emergency health system to construct an understanding of the scope of CBEH locally, nationally and internationally.

Objectives: By the completion of this unit, the student will be able to: 1. outline the history and development of emergency health systems locally, nationally, and internationally; 2. identify the goals and attributes of an effective community-based emergency health system; 3. use a contemporary framework of emergency health systems to identify the scope and factors influencing community-based emergency health systems, and use this model to identify the impact of change in these factors on the community-based emergency health systems; 4. identify factors which would improve integration, co-ordination, teamwork, continuity of care in the role of consumers in improving community-based emergency health systems; and 5. understand the role of the various components of the emergency health system through visits to selected agencies.
