Course description

This double-degree course provides students with an arts major and minor field of study as well as a sequence of studies in education leading to registration is a secondary school teacher. This course offers the most common pathway to teaching by way of a double-degree program in arts and education.
When students take the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Education degree in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study at a normal course load for each year. A feature of these courses is their interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some units.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 192 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in arts (96 points) including:

Majors and other studies

For full details on the majors and minors offered, refer to the `Areas of study' section on the Arts faculty website at http://www.arts.monash.edu.au/current/coursework/study_areas/.
(b) Studies in education (96 points) including a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.

Methods and practice of teaching units

Candidates intending to qualify as secondary school teachers need to be aware that their major and minor studies in arts must satisfy the requirements for the study of two methods and practice-of-teaching unit sets (A and B sequence = method set) in their fourth year (or third and fourth years for Gippsland students) and the requirements for employment laid down by the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Generally, to qualify for a secondary teaching method, a candidate will require a minimum of two years of full academic study in that discipline. There are additional requirements for some disciplines.
Progressively over the course, students will be completing more of the education component, until the final year, which will be entirely education including an extended teaching fieldwork. This fieldwork is a program of field visits to different educational sites and includes structured teaching experience. The fieldwork placement is an integrated part of work in the Bachelor of Education program.
