Course description

This double-degree course provides students with an arts major and minor field of study as well as a sequence of studies in education leading to registration as a primary school teacher. The course offers the most common pathway to teaching by way of a double-degree program in arts and education.
When students take the Bachelor of Arts degree and the Bachelor of Education degree in combination, they are able to complete both courses in four years of full-time study at a normal course load for each year. A feature of these courses is their interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of some units.

Course structure

To receive the awards of Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education, a student must successfully complete units totalling 192 points, consisting of:
(a) Studies in arts (96 points) including:

(b) Studies in education (96 points) including a series of units relating to the theory and practice of education, teaching and curriculum. Fieldwork placements are also included.

* For BA/BEd (Peninsula students), all arts units are to be undertaken at the Clayton campus and education units are to be undertaken at the Peninsula campus, except for EDF1301 and EDF1302, which will be undertaken at Clayton campus.
** For the BA/BEd (Gippsland students), all arts and education units are undertaken at Gippsland campus.

Fieldwork

Students must complete teaching practice which consists of a minimum of 80 days of satisfactory supervised school experience. Students who are employed in schools must complete a minimum of 40 days of supervised fieldwork in a setting other than the school in which they are employed.

Professional recognition

On completion of the double degrees, graduates will be eligible for registration and employment as primary school teachers in Victoria. For interstate and overseas positions, applicants are advised to check registration and employment requirements with local authorities.
