Course description

This double-degree program provides professional education in a range of commerce and business disciplines, with a strong emphasis on developing analytical skills, combined with complementary studies in science. Each science discipline is designed to lead to careers in relevant employment areas.

Course structure

Majors and other studies

Students must complete a major specialisation in one of the following disciplines taught by the Faculty of Business and Economics: accounting, finance, economics, business law and taxation, econometrics and business statistics, management or marketing. All units taken as part of the major specialisation are limited to units taught by departments of the faculty on the Clayton campus.
Other studies may be drawn from any of the disciplines taught on the Clayton campus by the Faculty of Business and Economics.
Students must also complete a major sequence from the disciplines offered by the Faculty of Science.
All units studied must be from the Faculty of Business and Economics at Clayton and the Faculty of Science.

Course requirements

The degree requirements are:
(a) Students must complete 18 units (108 credit points) from the Faculty of Business and Economics as follows:
(i) Completion of six compulsory common core units (36 credit points):

(ii) Completion of at least two units (12 credit points) from the following list:

First-year students normally may not take a second-year unit until at least four first-year units have been completed successfully.
(iii) A major specialisation of at least eight units (48 credit points) in a discipline or field of study of the faculty with at least 12 credit points at each of second and third-year level.
(iv) A maximum of eight first-year-level units (48 credit points).
(v) A minimum of four third-year-level units (24 credit points) must be from those offered by the faculty on the campus delivering this program.
(b) Students must complete 16 units (96 credit points) from the Faculty of Science as follows:
(i) The core units, either SCI1020 or MTH1030 and SCI2010.
(ii) A major sequence in a science discipline or area of study. A science major is defined as a three-year sequence constituting at least 48 credit points following one of the two patterns:

(iii) At least one minor sequence in a different science area of study, consisting of 12 credit points at level 1 and at least 12 credit points at levels 2/3.
(iv) Additional elective science units to ensure that at least 96 credit points of science units are taken overall.
(v) Students may not complete more than 36 credit points of level-one units.
(vi) Students must complete at least 24 credit points of level three science units.
(c) After 108 credit points from units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics (Clayton) and 96 credit points from the Faculty of Science, the remaining 12 credit points may be taken from further science studies, or units offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics, or any other faculties.
Students who wish to graduate with a Bachelor of Science, or undertake honours in science, prior to the completion of the
BCom/BSc must have completed at least 144 credit points of studies including all of the science requirements for the course.
The following unit is excluded from the double degree: STA1010 (Statistical methods for science).
The course may be completed in 4.5 years of full-time study at a normal course load, or in four years of full-time study by overloading six points in each year. The maximum time for completion is 10 years.
It is the student's responsibility to ensure that their enrolment complies with course requirements. Any student who has doubts on this matter should seek a meeting with a course adviser.
