Course description

This course helps students understand issues applying to the study of journalism, understand the role of communication in modern society, and develop practical skills and experience in the field.
Particular attention is focused on the skills applicable across print, radio and television; desktop publishing; electronic journalism; narrowcasting, as well as broadcasting on television and radio; and local, regional and international journalism. A comparative journalism approach and knowledge of a second language are encouraged.
The degree is designed to foster the acquisition of soundly based knowledge and skills that will enable graduates to seek employment in the journalism and communication industries. Journalism at Monash has an international focus, with a particular emphasis on Asia. The course aims to provide students with an opportunity to work in this broader region. There are opportunities for final-year students to take placements overseas. The course addresses Australia in its multi-racial and multicultural context, and looks at the responsibilities in reporting Aboriginal affairs.
