Synopsis: This unit explores the role of radio and television news and current affairs in society. Students consider the ways news reporting and editing can contribute to the construction of meaning. The unit also includes news production and journalism fieldwork.
Objectives: On successful completion of this unit students will have: 1) An understanding of the role of radio and television news and current affairs; 2) Knowledge of the practice of broadcast news reporting, writing and editing; 3) Ability in broadcast production work; 4) Experience in broadcast journalism fieldwork.
Assessment: Critical essay: 20% + Radio news script (2 minutes): 20% + TV Script (6 minutes): 20% + Live radio or TV program: 40%
Contact Hours: 2 hour workshop per week
Prerequisites: JRN1902 and JRN1903 or equivalents
