Synopsis: The unit considers journalism in both an international and a regional context. Students gain an understanding of Asian and Western values for journalism and the impact this might have on Australian journalism. Students compare various press systems and the impact of globalization on international news reporting. Topics include propaganda, censorship, reporting wars, media ownership, and national and international media agencies, with reference to specific national and international conflicts.

Objectives: 1) Critical and analytical understanding of the key theories in international news reporting; 2) Understanding of global journalism practices; 3) Ability to examine issues facing international news reporting, with reference to particular regions; 4) Understanding of the historical relationship between Western media, in particular the Australian media, and Asian media;

Assessment: Assignment 1 Essay (1500 words): 30% + Assignment 2 Media article (1000 words): 20% + Examination (2 hours): 50%

Contact Hours: 2 hours (one 1-hour lecture and one 1-hour tutorial) per week

Prerequisites: JRN1902 and JRN1903 or equivalents
