The program is intended to appeal both to recent graduates who wish to enhance their first qualification with studies in the area of electrical and computer systems engineering to improve their prospects in this area of sustained employment growth, and to mature students who wish to select units that suit their personal and professional needs as they develop from time to time and in so doing to accumulate credit towards the program over a period of some years.
The
normal entry requirement is a four-year degree or postgraduate-diploma-level
qualification in a discipline that provides a suitable basis for the course, eg
electrical, electronic, computer systems or communications engineering.
With the approval of the director of postgraduate coursework studies,
applicants with a four-year degree or postgraduate diploma in a discipline not
directly related to the course will be considered, if they have relevant
experience in computer systems, electrical engineering or communication
engineering.
Advanced standing in the program is available for applicants who hold a suitable postgraduate qualification. A maximum of 12-credit-point level five units from the Postgraduate Diploma in Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering may be counted towards the Master of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering.
The
masters course will normally consist of coursework units only.
With the approval of the course coordinator, a 12-credit-point group 2 project
or a 24-credit-point minor thesis may be taken, which will be assessed by two
examiners (the minor thesis is intended for candidates intending to proceed to
doctoral studies).
In the case of those taking the 12-credit-point project, up to 12 credit points
of units may be drawn from any postgraduate program of the university.
Units comprising at least 24 credit points must be chosen from the group 2 unit
list.
Note that not all units will be available in any given year.
The minimum length of the course is two semesters full-time, or equivalent part-time, post four-year degree. As the course is intended to be a professional development program, there is no maximum duration for completion of studies.
