Course description

This course is designed for teachers and school administrators involved in implementing a content-based immersion program in their school and to assist them to further their understanding of the processes of second language teaching and learning in such a context.

Entry requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must hold either:

• an approved three year bachelors degree in a relevant field with a credit average in the final year, or
• an approved three-year bachelors degree (or equivalent) and a fourth year of study, or
• an approved four-year bachelors degree, or
• qualifications or experience considered by the faculty board to be equivalent to, or a satisfactory substitute for, the above awards.

It would be advantageous for applicants to also have experience and/or qualifications as teachers or educational administrators.

Course outline

The course consists of 48 credit points of study. Students will complete the four following 12-point units:

• EDF6201 Theory and principles of bilingual/immersion education
• EDF6202 Establishing, maintaining and evaluating an immersion program
• EDF6203 The classroom and the bilingual/immersion teacher
• Any other relevant postgraduate unit approved by the course coordinator, or a research core unit if students wish to proceed to doctoral studies.

Candidates who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma of Education (Bilingual/Immersion Education) may complete a masters degree by undertaking up to a further two units (including a research core unit).
