Synopsis: Principles and theories of curriculum and syllabus design with a direct impact on the production of bilingual/immersion programs. Skills for producing an effective bilingual program and strategies for maintaining and evaluating it. Determining which curriculum areas are most appropriately taught through students' second/foreign language at particular stages in their language development.
Objectives: Upon successful completion of this unit, students should be able to identify the characteristics of a bilingual/ immersion program for their particular educational context; design an evaluation program for their bilingual/immersion program; identify and plan for the learning needs and styles of students in an on-going bilingual/immersion program; begin to design a bilingual/immersion program for their educational context in a range of subject areas across a number of consecutive year levels.
Assessment: Evaluation proposal (2500 words): 30% + Essay (4000 words): 45% + Outline of a bilingual/immersion program (2000 words): 25%.
