This course is designed to enhance and develop the knowledge and skills of accounting graduates in public practice, industry and academia. The degree encompasses studies at an advanced level in financial and managerial accounting, auditing, corporate and international finance and investments, and electives chosen from masters-level units offered in banking, marketing and management. Students attain an advanced conceptual understanding of the fields of accounting and finance, complemented by a wide range of practical applications and case studies. Students also gain insight into research methodologies and techniques which extend and support their learning and expose them to the contemporary issues and problems confronting modern accountants and finance specialists.
Applicants need to have completed, with an average grade of credit or above, a pass degree with a major in the discipline of accounting, banking, or finance, or an equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution. Students who have completed the Master of Practising Accounting, or an honours degree in accounting, or a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Accounting, or Postgraduate Diploma in Financial Management with an average grade of credit from this university may also apply for admission to this masters degree.
Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of eight credit exemptions for units considered to be equivalent to particular units in the course of study.
(a) Students must complete eight units (48 credit points) from one of the following streams:
(i) Five units (30 credit points) from the following list:
(ii) At least one unit (six credit points) from the following list:
(iii) A maximum of two units (12 credit points) from graduate offerings of the faculty, but no more than one taken from an external institution.
(i) At least two units (12 credit points) from the following list:
(ii) Four units (24 credit points) from
those listed in (i) above (and not previously selected) or from 4000-level
units offered by the Department of Accounting and Finance. If AFF4050 (Research
project) is chosen, then co-requisite units AFF4060 (Research methods I) and
AFF4061 (Research methods II) must be taken as well.
(iii) Remaining units chosen from the graduate program of the Department of
Accounting and Finance. Unit selection will be undertaken by students in
consultation with the course director.
