Course description

This course has been developed to meet the needs of health professionals, clinicians and policy makers for postgraduate qualifications in health economics. The program has been structured in such a way that prospective students are able to specialise in health economics, economic evaluation, international health or health policy.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete five core units (30 credit points):

• ECX9700 Introduction to health economics
• ECX9120 Introductory microeconomic theory and policy
• ECG9102 Introductory macroeconomic theory and policy
• ECX9741 Applied health economics and health policy

plus one of the following units:

• ECX9730 Economic evaluation in health care, or
• ECX9710 Pharmaceutical economics

(b) Three elective units (18 credit points) chosen from the following streams:

Economic evaluation stream

• ECX9720 Introduction to epidemiology and biostatistics plus

any two electives from group below:

• ECG9103 Ethics, economy and society
• ECG9170 Issues in labour economics
• ECX9750 Principles of health economics for developing countries
• MPH2049 Field methods for international health planning and evaluation

Economics stream (any three):

• ECG9103 Ethics, economy and society
• ECG9170 Issues in labour economics
• MBA9003 Economics for managers
• ECG9121 Economics of international trade

Health policy stream (any three):

• MGX9230 Public policy
• MGX9330 Privatisation
• MGX9370 Policy analysis
• MGX9670 International public policy
• ECG9170 Issues in labour economics
• MBA9003 Economics for managers
• BTC9300 Health services law

International health stream (any three):

• ECX9750 Principles of health economics for developing countries
• MGX9670 International public policy
• MGX5461 Contemporary issues in globalisation
• MPH2049 Field methods for international health planning and evaluation
• ECG9121 Economics of international trade

These recommended electives are by no means the only units that students enrolled in this course can undertake. Other options may well be appropriate to suit the needs of individuals.
Students who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma in Health Economics and Policy may apply for admission to the Masters in Health Economics and Policy and would be eligible for advanced standing for four units.
