Postgraduate Diploma in Japanese Language

Course code: 2545 + Mid-year entry available with the approval of the course coordinator + 1 year full-time, 2 to 3 years part-time + On-campus (Clayton)
Course coordinator: Robyn Spence-Brown

Course description

This course is designed to allow graduates who have competence equivalent to at least a basic major in Japanese (level 6 Japanese) to extend their competence in the language.

Entry requirements

The postgraduate diploma is open to graduates of any undergraduate course who have competence in Japanese to at least the level of an undergraduate major in the beginner's stream (Japanese 6). Various entry points are available for students with more advanced competence. Native speakers of Japanese who have completed their secondary education in Japan will not be accepted into this course.

Course structure

The course consists of 48 points, which is equivalent to one year of full-time study. The course is available full-time or part-time. Most students will take the course part-time over two or three years in order to allow them to complete sequential units. Students will normally complete one or two six-point language units per semester.
In addition to language units (prefaced by JLG), students who have completed level 8 Japanese may also take JLG4100 (Japanese 10) (6 points). Those who have completed Japanese 12 may be able to take interpreting and translation units prefaced by JIT.
Part-time students will have the option of taking postgraduate units in Asian studies, Japanese studies or applied Japanese linguistics up to the value of 24 points.
Full-time students will normally take up to 24 points of language units and 24 points of postgraduate units in Asian studies, Japanese studies or applied Japanese linguistics. Further advice on suitable units for individual students can be obtained from the school.

Schedule of units

All units are offered subject to availability of staff and sufficient enrolments and some units have an alternative year of offering (please check with the school). Some language units can be done concurrently with the permission of the coordinator.

Study in Japan

Subject to the approval of the school and faculty, certain units (but no more than 50% of the total requirements for any course) can be taken in Japan. However, students who have not completed their last undergraduate year at Monash will not normally be eligible to study in Japan in the first year of their candidature. The school currently maintains university-to-university agreements with about 10 Japanese universities. Opportunities exist for scholarships, and interested students should inquire with the convenor of the school's scholarship committee. Faculty approval must be obtained before students can proceed to an overseas study program.

Exit points

Students may be offered an exit award of a Graduate Certificate of Arts after successful completion of 24 points.
