Off-Campus Learning Guide 2005
Engineering

Graduate Certificate in Transport and Traffic

Course code: 2864 + Off-campus (Clayton) + Full-fee-paying course + Cost: Australian students - TBA ($1437.50 per six-credit point unit in 2004); international students - $1750 per six-credit-point unit (2005)

This program aims to provide a course of study for transport and traffic professionals wishing to expand their skills in areas of relevance to the planning, design, management and operation of transport and traffic facilities to meet their own personal and professional needs as well as the needs of their clients and the wider community. Graduates are able to bring together knowledge from the many disciplines involved in transport and to communicate effectively with other people in the industry and wider community.

Entry requirements

Participants will have a three-year degree in engineering, applied science or other appropriate degree program, an undergraduate degree in civil engineering or equivalent. For students without a degree, the minimum requirement would be three years of documented high-level technical experience, and completion of either:
1. Two graduate units (12 credit points) on a not-for-degree basis, and achieve at least a 65 per cent average.

2. One graduate unit (6 credit points) on a not-for-degree basis and complete an entry exam, based on the material covered in an industry program (a non-award program, for example the Transport Management Course in Bus and Coach Operations). This exam would test the understanding of the material and its application at an advanced level appropriate for entry to a postgraduate program. The student would need to achieve at least a 65 per cent result in the entry exam (which would be equated to six credit points towards a postgraduate degree) and at least 65 per cent in the further six-credit-point unit from the postgraduate program (taken on a not-for-degree basis) in order to be able to articulate into the graduate certificate.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Subject to individual assessment, credit may be granted for up to 50 per cent of the total course on the basis of work of equivalent standard successfully completed at another institution, and up to 25 per cent for work completed outside the Engineering faculty at Monash University but which has not formed part of the work presented for any other degree.

Course length

The course will be conducted by off-campus learning part-time over two semesters or one year. It may be accelerated to a six-month, full-time course. The course is therefore equivalent to 0.5 EFTSU or 24 credit points.
