The course provides formal academic study across a range of disciplines relevant to the needs of organisations operating in the global environment. It provides high-level training in the fields of international business, diplomacy, economics, law and contemporary politics. The course is aimed at those who currently work, or who hope to work, in both the public and private sectors and who wish to increase their understanding of the international environment in which they operate. It is also designed for those working in the government sector engaged in the implementation and provision of policy advice in the areas of foreign affairs, trade and business-related issues. In the private domain, the course is designed for individuals who are operating, or looking to work, in an international capacity in both the corporate or not-for-profit sector.

Entry requirements

Applicants need to have completed:

• a pass degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised tertiary institution, or
• an executive certificate from this faculty with an average of credit or above.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Candidates may be eligible for advanced standing for a maximum of six units considered to be equivalent to particular requirements in the course of study. Advanced standing is restricted to study completed in the last five years. The program coordinator assesses advanced standing.

Course structure

(a) Students must complete six core units (36 credit points):

• MGX5710 The contemporary world
• MGX5730 International trade policy
• ECF9210 Introduction to international economics

(b) Students must complete six units (36 credit points) as follows:
(i) six units (36 credit points) from the following list:

• MGF9640 Cross cultural communication and negotiation*
• MGF9500 International management process*
• MGX9150 Contemporary Asia
• MGX9160 Asia-Pacific: regional evolution and great power conflict*
• MGX9230 Public policy
• MGX9270 Public management
• MGF5171 International management*
• MGF5181 International business strategy
• MGF5640 Cross-cultural communication and negotiations*
• MGX5461 Contemporary issues in globalisation
• MGX5631 International human resource management*
• MGX5750 International environmental law and policy*
• MGX5760 International organisations
• MGX5770 Business and government
• MGX5780 World trade organisation*

or
(ii) four units (24 credit points) from (i) or other graduate units taught by the Department of Management, and two units (12 credit points) from units outside the Department of Management, providing the selection meets overall course objectives and receives program coordinator approval.
and

(iii) Two units (24 credit points) from (i) or other graduate units taught by the Department of Management, and MGX5901 (Research report - introduction) (12 points) and MGX5900 (Research report) (12 points) (a 20,000-word research report).

Students should complete four 9000-level graduate units before commencing 5000-level units. Masters students need to study a minimum of four 5000-level units or equivalent.
