The Diploma in Languages (with a specialisation in Indonesian) requires students to complete a major, which is normally three years of part-time study in the language. The diploma gives those students who have enrolled in an undergraduate degree not offered by the Faculty of Arts the opportunity to undertake language studies while completing the requirement for their undergraduate degree.

Entry requirements

Satisfactory completion of the VCE or equivalent with a study score of 25 in English (any) and a study score of at least 20 in any three other VCE studies. No previous study in Indonesian is required. Alternatively, students who have completed two not-for-degree units or two units through Open Learning Australia are also eligible to apply. Applicants who have completed a pass degree and meet the normal entry requirements may apply.

Special requirements

Attendance

Students are expected to participate in at least 10 hours of face-to-face study per semester. This may be taken as (a) attendance at one weekend workshop, (b) 10 hours tutoring from an Indonesian native speaker, or (c) a one-week, or equivalent, visit to Indonesia. In both (a) and (b), students are required to make recordings of tasks or interviews. All these students will be eligible for a Monash Study Abroad Scholarship.

Equipment requirements

All students are expected to have access to (a) a tape recorder for exams and short assignments, (b) a video recorder once per semester for 10 minutes - this will be made available for those attending weekend workshops, and (c) a computer with
CD-ROM drive and internet connection once per week (this can also be from a public library or from any Monash campus).
