The course deals with the basics of linguistics, and may be taken for its own sake or by way of preparation for the study of the applications of linguistics to professional and social contexts covered in the Master of Applied Linguistics program. It is normally taken over one year full-time or two years part-time. Students require a credit average in the postgraduate diploma program to transfer to the Master of Applied Linguistics by coursework.
Applicants should hold a bachelors degree with at least a credit average in the final year, or a bachelors pass degree with demonstrable professional experience at a senior level in a relevant area. (Such applicants will need to supply a CV, a 1000-word statement and the names of two professional referees). Prior learning may be recognised at the discretion of the course coordinator.
Exemptions (with or without credit) may be granted for comparable units completed elsewhere or at a previous time. Students who have completed relevant units at fourth-year (postgraduate) level may apply for a maximum of 24 points of advanced standing. Credits cannot be obtained for units that were part of a course for which a degree or an award of any kind has been taken out. No student may obtain more than 24 points of credit in total. Where an exemption is granted without credit (usually for a similar unit completed at upper undergraduate level), a suitable fifth-year (MA) unit will be taken in lieu (but may not be repeated if the student later progresses to the Master of Applied Linguistics).
At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. However, it is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.
The program is normally undertaken over one year full-time or two years part-time. The diploma program normally consists of three (but a minimum of two) core units and one (or a maximum of two) elective units (48 points in total)
Successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics with a credit average allows students to progress to the Master of Applied Linguistics by coursework.
There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
