Graduate Certificate in Linguistics

Course code: 3767 + Off-campus (Clayton) + Local students: Commonwealth-supported (HECS) place contributions apply + International students: unit fee $4500; course fee $9000 pa (full-time)

The course offers students without a degree but with extensive professional experience in relevant areas an exposure to the key ideas of linguistics so as to prepare them for continuing studies. The program aims to meet in part the needs of people wishing to apply linguistics in various professional fields; it focuses upon the central aspects of the discipline and aims at developing students' basic knowledge and skills in these areas. The course is taken over one semester full-time or one year part-time.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have either a pass bachelors degree or, more usually, extensive experience in language-related teaching translating/interpreting, journalism and so on. Alternatively, applicants should have completed, with credit, two of the program's fouth-year Open Learning Australia units (in which case the certificate may be awarded without further requirements).

Special requirements

At present, the only special requirement is that students will need access to an audiotape playback facility. It is highly recommended that students acquire email accessibility.

Advanced standing for previous studies

Credit will not normally be granted into the graduate certificate, unless the applicant has completed one or more of the units listed under the graduate certificate but has not taken out an award or a degree for the unit(s) in another program. Exemptions without credit will not normally be granted either. This program articulates with the postgraduate diploma, and students will receive full credit towards the diploma for the graduate certificate units they have completed as long as they have a credit average across the two units.

Course structure

Students complete two of the following fourth-year units (12 points per unit, 24 points in total):

Assessment

There are no examinations in this program. All units consist of continuous assessment, which may include a take-home test.
